Lola’s Sugar Pie Bakery

It was opening weekend last Saturday for the Alpharetta Farmer’s Market. Lots of great vendors to kick off the season! One in particular was Lola’s Sugar Pie Bakery. I love pie, especially in the Fall. It’s one of my favorite desserts to bake for family and friends. So, I couldn’t wait to taste test these babies.

This very talented pie baker is Lola Wilburn. She’s been in business for twelve years and is mainly an online bakery though you can find her at various farmer’s markets six days a week. Besides pies, Lola offers a large variety of baked goods…banana bread, pound cakes, cakes (sugar free, too), salted caramels, cookies and more.

There were a lot of choices but I was able to narrow it down to Pecan Pie, Lemon Pie and Buttermilk Chess Pie. I can never pass up pecan….all time favorite. I throw a little bourbon in mine at Thanksgiving. Lola’s was perfectly sweet with that gooey richness you expect and a light flakey crust. I pretty much inhaled the first half. Soooo good! Next was the lemon. I expected that usual tart bite that’s in most pies but it was very smooth. It was really good but I could have used a little more sugar. That’s just me, though. I always lean toward more sugar. Finally, I dug into the buttermilk chess pie. I haven’t had this since I was a kid. It tastes almost exactly like my Nana’s recipe. I felt eight years old again. The flavors remind me of eating Creme Brûlée. It was so good, I wished I’d bought the larger size.

As you can see from the featured photo of this post, I barely made it into the studio with the pies. Slightly embarrassing but oh well, the Saturday Market is in a  couple of days and I will buy more. If you live in the Atlanta area, stop by and say hello to Lola at one of the markets. Check out her website for a full list of goodies and order online. Support small businesses like Lola’s Sugar Pie Bakery so they can continue offering us home made goodness.
